On May 25th, 2024, a seminar and training workshop on the conservation of the rare Ludlow's Bhutan Glory was conducted by Nature Mates-Nature Club, Kolkata, in association with the Arunachal Pradesh Forest Department and supported by the Conservation Leadership Programme. This initiative marks the first effort from India towards the conservation of Ludlow's Bhutan Glory.
The workshop brought together staff from the Singchung Bugun Village Community Reserve, Forest Department, and members of the local community. Chief guest Richin Thongdok, member of the State Board of Wildlife, Guest of Honour Tabom Soki, DFO, and Special Guest Mr. Indi Glow addressed the participants and discussed ways forward for conservation in the future.
The Conservation Leadership Programme, a global support for conservation initiatives worldwide, has provided support for the first time for insect conservation. They are supporting the project for the conservation of Ludlow's Bhutan Glory in India, led by Sarika Baidya in Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary, Arunachal Pradesh. Sarika and her team are working with the local community to preserve the habitat and safeguard the endangered Ludlow's Bhutan Glory and spread awareness among local stakeholders and students.
RFO Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary, Yachang Kani, highlighted the success of the program, stating, "We learned about the identification of two Bhutan Glory species and the host and nectar plants of Ludlow's Bhutan Glory. The participants were encouraged to protect the host and nectar plants for the conservation of the endangered Ludlow's Bhutan Glory."
RFO Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary, Yachang Kani further inform that the Mystical Bhutan Glory, a rare and iconic species, has the same protection as a Tiger under the Wildlife Protection Act. Both are listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, which provides the highest level of protection to endangered and critically endangered species. As a Schedule I species, the Mystical Bhutan Glory is protected from hunting, trade, and other harmful activities, and its habitats are also protected and conserved.
The conservation of the Mystical Bhutan Glory is crucial for maintaining ecological balance and biodiversity in the Himalayan region. The collaborative effort of various organizations and individuals, led by Yachang Kani, is a significant step towards protecting this endangered species and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
