The Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary, in West Kameng District of Arunachal Pradesh is one of the crucial Biodiversity Hotspots in the world and home to several endangered species of animals, birds, butterflies, reptiles, insects, plants etc.
It is estimated that the Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary and Doimara Reserve Forest is inhabited by more than 350 different species of butterflies and more than 500 species of birds. Besides endangered species like Red Panda, Bogun Liocichla, Bhutan Glory Butterfly, Bompu Litter Frog, Mountain Elephant which is found in Perilla Top 11,000 feet above sea level and recorded as highest inhabitant of Elephant.
The Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary is not only the popular tourist destination but also for wildlife researchers to explore new species. Considering the above facts, the Natures Friendship Society in collaboration of Mahila Shakti Kendra, Balipara, Assam is organizing Maidan Eaglenest Butterfly Festival at Doimara/Khellong with the support from The Department of Tourism, and The Department of Environment Forest, & Climate Change, Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh with an objective to conserve and popularize butterflies and birds among young generation, students, and youths of the North Eastern States. Further, the celebration of the Butterfly Festival will pave the way to an opportunity for the local people for their economic upliftment through Rural & Adventure Tourism.
