Ibisbill was sighted at Ziding Kho River at Rupa during birding on 22nd December 2023. The birding program was participated by Yachang Kani, Rinchin Thongdok Member State Wildlife Board, Tsering Thongdok, and D K Thungon.
The ibisbill, a fascinating bird with a long, downcurved beak, boasts ancient origins nestled in the mountains of Central Asia and the Himalayas. While their exact evolutionary timeline remains somewhat shrouded, fossil evidence suggests their lineage dates back millions of years, making them true mountain denizens.
Today, their distribution stretches from Afghanistan and Pakistan across the Himalayas, reaching northern China and southern Russia. They favor shingle-bed river valleys with sparse vegetation, finding solace in the sun-warmed stones and the gentle flow of water.
Though not true long-distance migrants like some of their feathered brethren, the ibisbill undertakes remarkable seasonal journeys. Driven by the changing temperatures and food availability, they engage in altitudinal migration.
Summer Sojourns: During the warmer months, the ibisbill ascends to higher altitudes, seeking nesting grounds nestled amongst the rugged beauty of the mountains. Here, they build simple nests on sheltered slopes, raising their young amidst the crisp air and breathtaking landscapes.
Winter Wanderings: As the chill sets in and food becomes scarce, the ibisbill embarks on a descent. They gradually move down the mountains, seeking refuge in lower valleys where temperatures are milder and food sources might be more abundant. These wintering grounds can be as low as 100 meters above sea level, a drastic change from their summer heights.
This altitudinal dance, dictated by the natural rhythm of the seasons, paints a unique picture of the ibisbill's resilience and adaptability. Witnessing their seasonal changes offers a glimpse into the intimate relationship between this bird and its mountainous home.
So, the next time you find yourself amidst the grandeur of the Himalayas, listen closely for the ibisbill's melodic whistle. Remember, you might just be witnessing a living testament to an ancient lineage, forever intertwined with the rhythm of these mighty mountains.
